Finished and Raw Nama; it looks good enough to eat and is-the raw stuff that is. The finished stuff on the other hand makes you look good enough to eat!

Fiji is home to an array of locally made fantastic beauty products and treatments. One of these is the Nama Fiji brand. “Nama” you might say, “what is that? What does that mean? Where does that describe or imply beauty or therapeutic treatment or enhancement or feel-good factors?”

Well, the answer is simple and its origins start who knows how long ago when early settlers to Fiji discovered the Nama seaweed in Fiji. To this day it is still used as a tasty food source and you can find it in Lautoka market on Saturday mornings.

But what we are talking about here is its use in the Nama Fiji cosmetic product and spa treatment range; and the origins of that story go back to one woman; Debra Sadranu, who had a vision of developing a premier anti-ageing skincare line made from all-natural plant-based ingredients that could be sustainably harvested from the sea and nature here in Fiji.

Debra discovered the health benefits that the Nama seaweed possesses. Inspired by the healing power of the sea, Nama Fiji is a research-driven, Thalassotherapy skincare brand that harnesses the unique properties of Nama (Caulerpa Racemosa) and sea minerals to create organic, sea-inspired skincare therapies. And wouldn’t you know it Fiji’s waters produce the purest Nama in the world with the highest concentration of hydration and anti-aging properties.

Debra, with the help of CIAR-James Cook University in Australia, government agencies and the women of Somosomo village from Naviti Island in the Yasawa archipelago, launched the Nama Fiji skin care range in 2014. It has been available since then to spas and individuals alike. It has gone from strength to strength and today is represented not just at the Jack’s of Fiji retail stores, which you can find on Denarau at the Hilton Fiji Beach Resort & Spa, and at the Port Denarau Retail Centre, but also around the world online.

If Nama Fiji is anything, other than divine skin care, it is about contributing to the local economy and the women who derive income from. The money they earn goes to their families and village. Local women, villagers, living in a remote village in the Yasawa archipelago in the extreme west of Fiji.

Hear Nama’s story from the people who benefit from it most, apart from users of the actual skin care range of course!
