Denarau Island has undergone prodigious change and development within the last twenty-five years. There are new Resorts, refurbished and upgraded hotels and resorts, a wealth of established residential housing and improvements and enhancements to the beautiful gardens and surroundings. The services of all types on offer have increased exponentially. It is apparent in every sector you wish to look at, whether is be the number of guest rooms available on the island, the new resorts, the upgrading of facilities or the new operators offering exciting and interesting activities. SO much has changed.

Port Denarau Marina today, full of bustling activity as day trips and cruises come and go and locals and residents go about living in paradise, while yachts and superyachts pop in and out as they explore Fiji’s beautiful islands and waters.

An example of the prodigious changes that have occurred on the island is readily on display at Port Denarau Marina; it is symbolic of the whole island. Take a look at the pictures and you can see for yourself what is was like more than 20 years ago and what it is like now. I can remember standing at the port with my father one beautiful fine day twenty-five odd years ago when it was as it is in the picture; watching the sedate scene of small pleasure craft moving around as we talked boats and fishing,

Today the Retail and Commercial Centre, The Marina’s terminal and yachts and superyachts fill the vista along with the hustle and bustle of activity. The Palms and The Terraces Resorts, residential housing and other improvements fill the remaining spaces. The terminal was an essential improvement given that over the course of a year hundreds of thousands of people will pass through it as they depart for and return from their destinations.

The Marina has constantly grown over the last thirty years and it continues to grow today. Thirty years ago it was possible to imagine a few yachts setting their anchors here but Superyachts! Now Superyachts are a regular and normal part of the Fiji Seascape and a regular presence at the marina. Why wouldn’t all yachties be here, there are berths and moorings; facilities, talented people and Resorts and activities.

The Port offers services for visiting yachties as well as full support for the local residents, many of which have their own boats and private moorings on the island. You can find out more about what Port Denarau Island Marina has to offer here.

Given the ever-increasing popularity of Denarau Island as a destination it is hard to imagine what it will look like in another ten or twenty years, but if history is anything to go by, it will be something special.

How the marina looked 30 years ago. Quiet and sedate, with boats meandering in and out. The original visionaries knew it would grow into what it is today, that’s why they were visionaries, but it all seemed a far off dream in reality back then. Still it has happened and it’s credit to all the hard working people who have contributed to making it happen over the years.
The marina is a proud sponsor of the international NGO aid organization SeaMercy in which yachties devote their time and labour and vessels for the distribution of aid in emergencies. These two volunteers were helping to deliver relief supplies in the aftermath of tropical cyclone Winton in 2016, the most intense cyclone the southern hemisphere has ever seen and which swallowed Fiji whole. Thankfully we haven’t seen a repeat of that level of disaster since.
